Green Tips For Parents

By Hansa Draaka

Pregnancy and motherhood have made me even more conscious of how our daily actions affect our planet and our children's future.  There are many simple things we can do that add up to a healthier home.  Here are some tips that I've learned along my way:

  1. Don't buy a changing pad. I used a folded wool blanket (from goodwill) which is very absorbent and washable, covered with a blanket or pad cover and put it on top of my dresser with a non-slip shelf liner underneath. At about 4.5 months we started using the bed to change her since she got too wiggly and rolly!

  2. Don't buy many new clothes, books or toys. You will probably get hand me downs and the thrift stores have great finds.

  3. A mylar balloon clipped to baby's sock is a very entertaining toy! (cheap at Dollar Tree)

  4. Don't buy a diaper pail. Just use an inexpensive, flip-top garbage can.

  5. A used car seat can be a good deal, but make sure it hasn't expired (6 years from manufacture date). This is especially important with convertible seats that you'll use for years.

  6. Use empty baby food jars to freeze homemade food. Only fill them half way.

To be continued......
